National Award Winning Music that Makes a Difference

History Alive Series - Music & Storytelling

Fire in Boomtown: A fast-paced, fact-based, re-enactment of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This multi-award-winning show comes to life through original story and song. Megan Wells joins Amy for this series.
Immigration/Ellis Island: This is a first-person musical narrative about coming to America. An immigrant story, woven with engaging, memorable songs about the journey by boat, through storms, Lady Liberty, doctors at the dock, the anxious process of Ellis Island, detention in the hospital, and reunited families. All Aboard: The race to link East to West was on. Who would be the first to build the Transcontinental Railroad? You hear the story from the point of view of Irish and Chinese immigrants, newly freed slaves, settlers, industrialists, natives Americans, and the buffalo. Movin' In – Building a Town: The story of settling a small Midwest farm town and its growth into one of Illinois' largest communities. Original toe-tapping interactive songs and stories that tell the tale.

Stomp Your Feet to the Jammin' Beat: Environmental awareness, neighborhood diversity, and the ability of everyone to make his or her music are just a few of the themes covered in this lively, entertaining program. Amy offers selections from Parents Choice award-winning CDs I like Gum and Brighter Than Fireflies. These encourage the audience to clap their hands, stomp their feet, and sing along to the jammin' beats. These are songs and stories that spark imagination in all ages.
Music Across the Ages, from the Past to the Present: Popular songs from the early 19th century until today. Sharing music that covers a variety of styles from Jazz & Blues, Folk & Country, World Music, Pop, and Americana, mixed with a selection of original pieces. Seasonal Songs & Holiday Magic: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Holidays — Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day. These vibrant songs bring a fresh feeling to any seasonal holiday gathering as contemporary arrangements of holiday classics tastefully blended with original music.

These include Guitarist/Bassist, Dave Katzman and a host of Percussionists- including: Jose Rendon , Dave Sims, and/or Marty Binder and/or Rick King Dave uses early Bee-Bop, jazz, Chicago blues, traditional country, and classical guitar influences to weave smooth, raw textures of color through Amy's strong, melodic voice.

Through a multi-media presentation of slides, live music, and drama, discover that our eyes are like camera lenses that can capture art anytime, anywhere. Photographer Mike Kelly joins Amy for this presentation.
The Journey of Estevanico the Black: Search for the Seven Cities of Gold - An American Hero (a.k.a.) Voices of Arizona: A Story Rarely Told
America's First African Explorer: This incredible musical tale highlights the early days of Spanish-American history and African-American history. Learn about Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and Estevanico the Black, a Moor from Azamor, Morocco. They make a remarkable eight-year odyssey across the continent. This marks Estevanico's pioneering trek as one of the early explorers into Arizona and New Mexico. Their journey predates Coronado's exploration of the Southwest. Estevanico also known as Esteban the Black lived among various Native American Nations, and become the first outsider to enter Arizona / New Mexico territory. This fascinating historical tale comes to life through engaging musical narrative and compelling original songs.

Retelling Stories Through Song

Participants select and retell a short story and learn how to turn the text into a song. Through creating and performing, they understand how to produce works of art as they interpret, identify, and perform words that express the story's theme. Participants are inspired to find the rhythm in words, recognize and write rhymes, sing, record, and listen to their compositions.

From Text to Lyric to Song

  • Singer-songwriter Amy Lowe teaches the art of storytelling through song. She introduces songwriting techniques as a tool for enhancing writing skills and reading comprehension.

  • Through creative group interaction, participants identify rhythm and rhyme, write and tell stories, and turn them into lyrics.
  • Participants choose a rhyming scheme and learn about song form.
  • Participants complete, perform, record, and listen to their songs.
Amy combines music, poetry, art, reading, writing, and performance to give students an inside look at what being a composer is all about. Topics and themes grow from classroom studies, personal experience, fantasy, and environmental sights and sounds.

Parent/Teacher/Staff Workshop

Sound, Art, and the Music of Words: Singer-songwriter Amy Lowe inspires participants to explore the rhythm of words and learn how to add musical elements to text in creating musical compositions.
Through creative group interaction, theater games, and music activities, participants learn how to demonstrate simple rhythms through chant and body percussion that identifies the feeling and mood. There are plenty of opportunities to create and perform their original compositions with each other.
